Why being a & #39;specialist& #39; in today& #39;s world is OVERRATED compared to being a & #39;jack of all trades& #39;, which most of the times is considered as a bad thing..

\\ EXTRA THREAD //
This world in which we live in today is evolving and changing at a rapid speed. Adapting & learning new skills constantly is more crucial than at any other time in our history. However, since we were kids, society tells us that specializing in one area is the way to go...
Well .. IT IS the way to go if you wish to be miserable as time passes. Even Bill Gates stated in 2020 that "what we actually need is more people who broad and embrace diverse experiences and perspectives while they progress". Here& #39;s why he& #39;s right..
Look, if you& #39;re a super talented and competent athlete, singer, or guitar player, you& #39;re in luck, as society puts a huge emphasis on skills like these and you have a very rare chance to "capture the spotlight" in an instant and bring value for a massive audience.
However, for most "normal people", specializing won& #39;t put you in the spotlight, it will force you to be a part of the crowd. For most people, you either evolve and innovate ALL THE TIME, or you die. The most creative breakthroughs come via a combination of skills and backgrounds.
The people who do that are called generalists, and they& #39;re bringing the best of various skills they honed and combine them to an extra-rare, world-class 1% skill. On the contrary, specialists just focus on knowledge from their own field in almost every aspect of their lives.
That& #39;ll eventually bring specialists to a reality in which what they do might not be relevant anymore, and because of their egos, unrealistic optimism, or ignorance, they& #39;ll be left behind. They decide to run a sprint, while generalists take a slower, approach to a marathon.
Having a 1% skillset of 3-5 skills combined, will automatically put you in the top 1% of society, as long as you know how to present yourself and market your value to people around you. I promise you that a 1% skillset and combination is a bullet-proof concept which will free..
you from being in the rat race and competing with everybody else. But Master Wayne, how do I develop a 1% skill? Well, in 2021, you shouldn& #39;t be allowed to ask this kind of question my friends.
Nowadays, it& #39;s easier and faster than ever to become very competent in a wide set of skills. using websites like @skillshare, @udemy, @coursera,or even watching @YouTube videos on various topics can expose you to a goldmine of ideas and combinations, which will fit you perfectly.
The key is to find what is true for YOU, as well as what is missing and NEEDS to be filled in society. Only "following your heart and passion" won& #39;t cut it here. Do research, ask questions, read books, learn bullet-proof and eternal skills like marketing, persuasion, Leadership
and how to solve complex problems. When you combine these aspects, you CREATE A NEW MARKET, A NEW EXPERTISE! That is truly the best way, and pretty much the only way, for 99% of the people to get the life they truly aspire to.
Leonardo De Vinci said it best - "Study the science of art. Study the art of science. Develop your senses - especially learn HOW TO SEE. Realize that everything connects to everything else"...
That& #39;s pretty much it. If you read this far, I appreciate it sincerely and hope you learned something new. For more in this subject, I highly recommend reading the book "Range" by David Epstein. Many aspects of this thread were inspired by him.
BONUS - some of the accounts I follow for honing my skills I aspire to be competent at and combine them for something truly special ;)
