I’m in line at DPS headquarters in Oklahoma City to renew my driver’s license. There’s already about 25-30 people ahead of me. The office opens at 7 a.m.
Well. I got inside, but only to enter my phone number to get a ticket number for a *possible* appointment this afternoon. If they don’t contact me today, I have to come back tomorrow to get another ticket and repeat the process. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😐" title="Neutrales Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Neutrales Gesicht">
I brought fruit, snacks and water in my backpack and was prepared to wait all day. So I guess this is a better scenario since I’m now essentially “on call” for an appointment.
One of the people in line with me said he’d been there since 4:30 a.m. And he said the first guy in line had been there since 2:30 a.m. All for a *chance* at an appointment today.
I tried renewing online, but after several weeks of nothing, the system rejected me and refunded my fees. I apparently have to show my immigration documents, and I can only do that at an in-person appointment at a DPS examination site or HQ.
I just went back in line and into the office to check the likelihood that I’d be called today. A DPS employee said it wouldn’t be until this afternoon at the earliest. “It just depends how fast or slow it’s going.” They said they got through 25 walk-ins yesterday by 4 p.m.
Just got back to DPS. They said that first text goes out when you’re 10 appointments away. The next text goes out when you’re 5 appointments away. So I might still have a while to wait here on-site.
Got the second alert text. So I’m now inside the building and waiting in the waiting room. #oklicense
Quick update: I waited another 2 hours inside until they called my number. Once I was at the counter, it only took another 20 minutes to check my documents & verify my residency. I ended up getting a Real ID. I have a paper copy, but they said license will be mailed in ~2 weeks.
