Emotions dump incoming. I applied for a job at @basecamp 1.5 yrs ago. I saw the posting and it was a dream job really. I was hesitant to apply because I was happy with my current job and I have a MASSIVE case of imposter syndrome. But then I saw this snippet in the job post. (1/
"We strongly encourage candidates of all different backgrounds and identities to apply. Each new hire is an opportunity for us to bring in a different perspective, and we are always eager to further diversify our company. " (2/
That gave me the courage to apply. It might be a long shot but still, you gotta shoot your shot right? It didn& #39;t take long for me to get a nice response saying they were going to pass on my application. Which was fine. But today I got to thinking about it. (3/
If you& #39;re a company looking for diverse candidates, you& #39;re saying I wasn& #39;t even worth a phone screen? A published author, a public speaker, almost 2 decades of of relevant experience. And I wasn& #39;t worth even chatting with? (4/
And this isn& #39;t to say that I deserved the job or that the person who ultimately got the job (a white male) is in any way unqualified or underserving. What I& #39;m saying is if you& #39;re actively striving for diversity, you& #39;re not changing the practices that lead to the imbalance? (5/
Maybe they had a flood of black applicants. Maybe I was going up against @kelseyhightower and @bryanl and @polotek and @buchatech and other super talented brothas in this field. I gave them the benefit of the doubt until this morning& #39;s announcement. Now I have my doubts. Now it seems they& #39;re not interested in doing the hard work around building diverse teams and diverse leadership. I know it& #39;s hard. Change is hard. But this company thrives on solving problems worth solving. Even if it just means being a model for others. (7/
So this news kinda hits hard. Changes my views on what kind of change is really possible. I respect the honesty. It& #39;s good to know when a company is paying lip service and when they& #39;re ready to do the work. (8/
