MICROPHOBIA : A THREAD (1/17)) [please rt to spread awareness] tw// height
WHAT IS MICROPHOBIA? (2/17)
Microphobia is prejudice against people of average height (Micros) for features beyond their control. Micros frequently experience numerous difficulties and prejudices because of their height, often with disastrous consequences. (3/17)
WHAT CAUSES MICROPHOBIA? (4/17)
There are multiple factors that lead to microphobia. The most common are societal perceptions of Micros and biological factors related to their height. Height has been shown to have direct links to intelligence, and women are less likely to be attracted to Micros, with ... (5/17)
~4% of women being taller than their partner. Also, eHarmony has been reported to have discriminated against Micros, providing less than usual or even in some cases no partner options at all for Micro users. (6/17)
Many people also view Micros as being weaker than people of or above average height. A 2011 study determined that taller people were more capable of being leaders, and that the taller candidate won the majority of US elections. (7/17)
Micros also struggle to complete day-to-day tasks that the rest of us might find simple, such as reaching a high shelf or keeping up with their few friends. (8/17)
Because of these factors, many people have subconscious or even active prejudices towards Micros. These prejudices manifest themselves through mockery of Micros, and the usage of slurs like sh*rt, dw*rf, and m*dget. (9/17)
HARMFUL EFFECTS OF MICROPHOBIA (10/17)
Microphobia does not just manifest itself as mockery or ableism towards Micros, and often it has life-threatening real-world consequences. A 2016 study found that, on average, every centimetre in height correlates to an increased wage of approximately A$500. (11/17)
A 2014 study determined that every 10cm height correlates to a 7% decrease in violent criminality. (12/18)
tw// suicide
Micros also have significantly higher suicide rates as a result of microphobia. In fully adjusted models, a 5-cm increase in height was associated with a 9% decrease in suicide risk, according to a 2005 study. (13/17)

Within the medical community microphobia and related issues are dismissed. Micros are more likely to experience paranoia and depressive symptoms, but these issues are commonly dismissed as “Sh*rt Man Syndrome”, showing a clear ignorance towards the struggles of Micros. (14/17)
Despite all this, l*ttle to nothing has been done to combat microphobia, and barely anyone even knows what it is. (15/17)
HOW YOU CAN HELP (16/17)
There are many ways you can help combat microphobia. You NEED to challenge your own internal microphobia, and help others around you overcome theirs. Share any resources you can find about microphobia and listen to Micros, even if you need to kneel down to hear them. (17/17)
Please RT and share this thread, and remember to support your Micro friends if they need a lift to the top shelf or a high stool!
