In 2010 I was in You Don’t Know Jack with Al Pacino. I played the prosecutor that puts him in prison. At the first table read, I knew no one and no one knew me. Actually, no one really spoke to me. Until Al came in. He looked me right in the eye, smiled, and said, “Hi.” 1/6
Working with him was a bucket list moment. I was getting to work with one of my heroes. Surreal. On my last day I told him I was done. Always in character, he broke momentarily, said “You were fantastic” and gave me this huge hug. I was in shock. Did that just happen?! 2/6
Approval and affection from a hero of mine?! Later that night, production called to say, “We actually need you for one more shot in the morning.” My first thought was, “But I told Al I was done?!” Though really... he’d probably never notice. 3/6
I mean, who was I? Some actor he never knew and would likely never remember. The next morning he walked behind me as I sat in the courtroom and quietly said, “Last day, huh?” Exasperated I said, “It was, Al! It was!!! But then they called and... and...” 4/6
he grins, yells to the entire room, “HE WANTED A HUG!” Years later, I got to work with Al again on Danny Collins. I said “You probably don’t remember me, but...” He yells to the room “This guy! This guy was so good the police came to my house and arrested me when we wrapped.” 5/6
Turns out one of the biggest guys in town is also one of the nicest. And he never misses a beat. Happy Birthday, Al!
