If we want to solve this long-term problem of low quality work for young people, we cannot rely on a nascent and unpredictable booms in demand for pubs and shops. There needs to be a more comprehensive, state-led approach to setting young people on the right path (4/12)
Jobs Guarantees are a well established social programme used across the world, including in many High Income Countries.

And here& #39;s the really important thing - a Jobs Guarantee for young people has already been tried and shown to be effective *within the UK* (9/12)

In edition to demonstrated effectiveness, a Jobs Guarantee Programme has the added value of political sellability.

The electorate are more compelled by the idea of offering a & #39;hand up& #39; in the form of an opportunity to work than a & #39;hand out& #39; in the form of cash benefits (10/12)
Jobs can also be situated in sustainable sectors and tethered closely to training and progression. A mix of direct employment by the state plus funded and regulated schemes in the private sector will also spread the benefits of employing the young across the economy (11/12)
In a year of muscular state interventionism and downwardly spiralling prospects for young people, the argument for a Jobs Guarantee Programme for young people has never been so strong.
