Ok, friends I& #39;ve got a hot pre-order tip for you because I spent last week in Tokyo with Mizuki and she was such a great companion I think you will want to meet her next month when FAULT LINES by @EmilyItami is published. Here& #39;s the https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🧵" title="Thread" aria-label="Emoji: Thread">
This slim novel is the story of Mizuki& #39;s affair. Like most slim novels it& #39;s also about what it means to be a person in the world. Love. Family. Sacrifice. Responsibility and Duty - and if they& #39;re the same thing. Being Japanese/not being Japanese enough; self-doubt and self-worth.
I am not Japanese (though I have visited and it was a HUGE thrill to revisit through reading) so this cultures intricacies are not mine, and yet Mizuki is so relatable, so down-to-earth I felt I was listening to a best friend. Someone I& #39;d want to be friends with for sure.
Every chapter made me smile in recognition. Moments of motherhood that I know so well; Itami is particularly excellent on the deliciosity of babies. Also, Mizuki is funny! She& #39;s got sass and spike. This is the triumph of Itami& #39;s gemstone writing. So sharp! So SPARKLY!
Each chapter seems to be bookended by especially yummy sentences too. I& #39;d finish one with an Oooh and then be immediately seduced by the start of the next. The whole book is a bento box of delights. I devoured it, I hope you will too.
