for those unaware, d:bh is a poor analogy and appropriation of black culture, civil rights movements, and the holocaust. be critical of how it handles these themes, especially given ongoing IRL protests. here’s a short thread of useful commentaries on this game and its topics
this commentary article points out and criticizes the flawed analogy between black people and androids. it explains the way d:bh commodifies black culture and suffering in order to add supposed weight and depth to his fictional story about robots https://io9.gizmodo.com/the-casual-inhumanity-of-how-detroit-become-human-uses-1826776147">https://io9.gizmodo.com/the-casua...
Mother’s Basement points out that, while there are decent characters, d:bh is an overall insensitive allegory on black civil rights and the holocaust. this is a very good and understandable recap. MB also dissect’s david cage’s denial of responsibility https://youtu.be/GwVERl0OYjc ">https://youtu.be/GwVERl0OY...
not really a full commentary in itself, but this short article points out even more instances of misappropriation. it also gives the audience further context of the game’s existence and highlights some very questionable words from the game’s developer https://www.theilluminerdi.com/2020/06/25/breaking-up-with-detroit-become-human-5-times-quantic-dream-misappropriated-black-and-jewish-history/">https://www.theilluminerdi.com/2020/06/2...
this is a blog article, but a very useful critical look at how d:bh fails to handle it’s various forms of abuse with a rounded attitude. also points out how the game has questionable attitude towards what defines humanity, and the “gamification of abuse”

people can have favorite characters. but please be aware that, even though d:bh has some well made aspects, the game has fundamentally flawed and disrespectful messages. this is especially relevant now, given ongoing civil rights protests of which the game gets inspiration from
this thread isn’t meant to be weaponize, nor is it meant to divert attention away from urgent ongoing protests.
it’s meant to be a short thread of resources in response to the resurgence in praise towards the game, likely said without realizing how harmful its messages are

as always, i’m trying to boost the voices of people impacted by these topics and those who have already spoken out in criticism. if i ever overstep a line, please let me know and i will fix that as soon as i can
and now that people are more aware of this game’s insensitive messages (or at least aware of the debate) i’m going to include some links to support ongoing, real civil rights protests that the game disrespects
