JN046 is possibly the best #anipoke episode in the series thus far, because it showcased how much this duo have developed over the past year!

Before we start…sorry for the long thread. I don’t usually do episode analyses and initially only wanted to make a few tweets pointing out interesting parts of the episode. Eventually I realised there were too many things for "a few tweets".

Let’s Gou!

After a great movie-style intro, we are reminded of Gou’s goal…

…and the duo embark on an adventure straight out of the Anipoke textbook.

Gou still uses his brains and gadgets…

…while Satoshi still goes with his gut.

Satoshi is still more athletic than Gou, leaping off the cliff while Gou carefully clambers down.

The duo are still amazed by the Pokémon they meet…

…and they still get in trouble too.

Though Gou continues his catching spree…

…we also see how his previous catches have now become his partners.

While Gou has certainly become more adventurous…

…he still gets frightened when things become hairy. Luckily, Satoshi is always there to save the day.

Mewtwo’s lair is where it really gets interesting, as it was an incredible display of their friendship and teamwork.

For continuity purposes, the difference between Satoshi’s and Gou’s reactions to Mewtwo is palpable.

In fact, Satoshi’s response was portrayed so well, it has to be seen in motion.

If anyone is still in any doubt, this scene truly cements Gou’s role as a protagonist. Best speech since the Alola episode – just look at that brilliant voice acting and body language.

We were then blessed with so many great parallel shots…

(I absolutely adore these)

…and witness how well they now battle as a team. Notice how their Pokémon mimic their trainers’ teamwork, as well as their colours.

Speaking of battling…we interrupt this thread to bring you this scene of Pikachu getting launched in Smash Bros.

After everyone gets wrecked by Mewtwo, they still manage to pull themselves together to say this in unison.

(It’s not often that trainers themselves get attacked, and I really love their scruffy, beat-up look!)

Finally it’s back to home base at Sakuragi Institute. These shots really reminded me of the Jirachi movie.

I cannot stop gushing about how great the ending scenes were. Truly heartwarming
