"A lone daikon radish has been attracting attention from locals after it was recently discovered growing by the foot of a busy pedestrian overpass in the heart of the metropolis of Osaka in western Japan." https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20201106/p2g/00m/0na/133000c">https://mainichi.jp/english/a...

In 2005 a similar radish was discovered growing through the asphalt of Aioi City. Locals were quick to let the tiny daikon into their heart, nicknaming it 大ちゃん (dai-chan).
But their happiness was of short duration, as disaster struck not much later. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2005-11-18/gutsy-radish-in-intensive-care/742746">https://www.abc.net.au/news/2005...

They did not manage to perform successful surgery on the radish, but Dai-chan nevertheless lives on.
Dai-chan, who is often referred to as a ど根性大根大 ("gutsy radish"), has his own festival which was still celebrated on November 23, 2019. https://www.kobe-np.co.jp/news/seiban/201912/sp/0012932809.shtml">https://www.kobe-np.co.jp/news/seib...

This 2015 video from a local radio station shows a picture book created (and narrated!) by students of a local public primary school, followed by a song that was written for Dai-chan. https://youtu.be/3-Au21cVnQA ">https://youtu.be/3-Au21cVn...
Back to the daikon radish in Osaka: I have important new information. I want all of you to know that Japanese versions of the article at the start of this thread mention that Koji Shima (68) smiled when he said seeing the radish grow in such a place made him feel good.
I have bad news... https://twitter.com/saru_bashira877/status/1325206318135717888">https://twitter.com/saru_bash...
