2/6 While the laws surrounding this market vary by location, trading human remains pushes legal, moral and ethical boundaries. Would you want your loved one turned into a can opener? From left to right: 1) a war trophy 2) bottle opener made of human bone 3) a child’s brain
3/6 The trade in human remains echoes dark Colonial-era practices, when dead indigenous peoples were dehumanized. Many of the items traded today on social media are of indigenous heritage, depriving families, communities and entire cultures of their legacy and history.
4/6 @counteringcrime researchers have identified dozens of human remains trading Groups on #Facebook and #Instagram, with a membership of more than 300,000. Rising demand for creepy products has led to an explosion of grave robbing and the plunder of church crypts.
