this thread is for people that don’t know the real meaning of the catrina :) (this is also for mexicans because some of yall are spreading misinformation)
so first i want to clarify that catrinas weren’t part of the original día de muertos so stop reducing it to that please it means so much more,, however catrinas have become a HUGE part of our culture that’s why they were included in this celebration
where did catrinas come from?? the first appearance of the catrina was in 1912 (día de muertos was celebrated even before the conquest (1521)) it was a social critique to woman that climbed the social ladder and wanted to deny their origins and pretend to be european
they basically they denied their indigenous roots and pretended to have a “european lifestyle” and they also wanted to pretend to be “rich”
to this day mexicans write “calaveritas” they’re basically rhymes where we mock social classes, current problems, dead, etc. This became a tradition because the man that first drew the catrina wrote these rhymes mocking social classes.
to give context of why a skeleton is used to mock a social class i’ll do my best to translate a phrase of the original author of the catrina:
“Dead is democratic, at the end of the day, white, brown, rich or poor, every person ends up becoming a skeleton” -José Guadalupe Posada
“Dead is democratic, at the end of the day, white, brown, rich or poor, every person ends up becoming a skeleton” -José Guadalupe Posada
the catrina became a huge part of our culture and traditions that’s why it was included in el día de muertos like other elements that weren’t originally there,, i tried to explain it as simple as i could so if missed something feel free to add :)
i want to clarify that even though the catrina isn’t an original element it’s still really important for us but i’m not gonna tell yall if it’s offensive or not because one person can’t speak for everyone (opinions are very divided)
this thread is abt the catrina but please if you want to talk abt día de muertos make some research, día de muertos means something different for every family for me it’s making tamales with my mom because my grandpa loved them and making an ofrenda but everyone is different :)
also if you want to refer to a “male catrina” say “catrín” and please don’t call the makeup “sugar skull makeup”
