Speaking with Linda from @GlasgowNE made me aware of some things – things that I would otherwise never have even considered – regarding the poverty so many people are experiencing right now in the East End of #Glasgow. And why #foodbanks aren& #39;t the answer.

Apart from the fact that nobody living in the world& #39;s 5th largest #economy should ever have to worry about being able to afford food, for either themselves or for their family, there& #39;s actually a lot more to #poverty than just food provisions. It& #39;s far more complicated.

A subject too often overlooked is #fuelPoverty. So many people today are having to choose between heating their homes or cooking a dinner. Some days even foregoing eating anything at all. Especially as we move into #winter and temperatures drop. A truly harsh trade-off.

Most of us take for granted the massive cost savings achieved through the refrigeration and freezing of our food. But if you can& #39;t afford to power these appliances, such savings aren& #39;t afforded to you. The option to cook big and spread throughout the week too is denied.

If you know that boiling potatoes on the stove costs more than boiling a kettle, you may feel restricted to eating instant mash instead. This is just one example of why #healthyEating isn& #39;t always that simple a choice to make. For many it& #39;s a luxury they can& #39;t afford.

A lot needs fixed by the people placed into power in this country (looking at you @10DowningStreet). But until they do, and we must ensure that they do, those who find themselves in a more fortunate positon might consider how they& #39;re able to #helpOut those more in need.

Linda wants to be put out of a job (she said so). And until @UKGovScotland, @scotgov, @ScotGovFM, or whoever, sort it out... she, and other foodbanks throughout the country, rely on YOU. And #donating MONEY gives them more control over how they help their #communities.
