Ayo, let it be known that Black fans continue to be underrepresented and silenced in fandom communities: a thread https://twitter.com/devildykedils/status/1319956377503137792">https://twitter.com/devildyke...
If you have the audacity to call this any form of “trivial drama,” you’re getting a block. Period. It’s not fair to us as Black people within fandom spaces that we have to continuously fight for our voices to be heard while nb people always get first dibs at the spotlight. +
I love being a part of the MSheen fandom. It’s great. But the moment that the largest figure in the fandom attacks one of my fellow Black moots (albeit one of my best friends on here), I start to question the validity of my Blackness in this community. +
This tone deaf act on Michael’s behalf isn’t just an unique community problem either. It’s a dark cloud that has loomed over all communities since the dawn of racism. No fandom is perfect, and shit hits the fan when your idol unveils deep seated problems in your safe space. +
I understand that many of you support BLM and Black people as a whole. Awesome, I guess. But there’s a whole lot of difference between acknowledging our existence with three letters in your bio versus continuing to learn from and actively give platforms to Black people. +
We are here. We exist not in the shadows as a “trendy movement,” but as real people. Real fans. Flesh and blood with our own thoughts and feelings, and who can be significantly affected by the words and actions of large figures that we are supposed to look up to and admire. +
So, I’m going to take this time on my own platform to relay a final message to the fandom and to @michaelsheen: do better, because this is far from enough.
What the fuck am I saying? Don’t block people when we ask for a crumb of representation! This is disappointing.
