re: previous retweet about not needing to be in a clique to be successful in this industry… i want you all to believe this with your whole hearts.
my first book pubbed in 2017, and since then i’ve learned that having a lot of followers does not automatically mean:
-more sales
-better connections
-industry people seeing you as having “more worth”
-or that someone with followers is THE VOICE of publishing/books/other authors
i can’t stress enough how important it is to take care of yourselves in this industry, and to not let numbers on social media trick you into thinking you don’t have value, or that you’ll never make it because you aren’t “popular.”
so much of what you see on here is an illusion, and not reflective of real life. my previous twitter account had grown to 7k+ followers before i deleted it for my own mental health and took a year off. (and tbh, who knows how much longer i& #39;ll keep this new one.)
but while having that platform can be a lovely way to connect with readers and other authors, it is not a requirement for publishing a book. do some people make genuine friends and connections on social media? yes, absolutely, and that’s great!
but a lot of what you see on social media exists in an echo chamber too, and as someone who has almost exclusively felt like i’m on the outside looking in, please be aware that what you’re seeing isn’t a gate or a door to this industry—it’s just a window in someone’s house.
(also? some people are popular because they& #39;ve mastered a certain language that social media responds well to. just because someone seems caring or kind doesn& #39;t mean they definitely are. so PLEASE be careful about what you share, and who you share it with.)
honestly, sometimes i just feel like authors put so much pressure on themselves to be HERE, all the time, because we’re so terrified we won’t make it in this industry or that our books will flop if we don’t do everything in our power to promote them.
but the reality is that what affects sales the absolute most is all the wonderful work and promotion being done in-house. it’s not what you tweet. it& #39;s not how many followers you have. and it& #39;s not whether you& #39;re a part of any clique.
don’t let this hellsite make you feel bad about yourself or your writing. keep following your own path. you got this. and remember that whatever you’re feeling, you’re not alone. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💜" title="Violettes Herz" aria-label="Emoji: Violettes Herz">
