I& #39;ve got 10 minutes left of my "lunch break" so... let& #39;s talk about this!
I don& #39;t take off late points for student work submitted after the deadline! Get your pitchforks ready! https://twitter.com/SurthrivEDU/status/1318555980712628224">https://twitter.com/SurthrivE...

"But how will kids learn the lesson that deadlines matter?" you ask!
Well, would it surprise you to know that, despite my policy of not penalizing late work, most kids still meet the deadlines?
Well, would it surprise you to know that, despite my policy of not penalizing late work, most kids still meet the deadlines?
They meet the deadlines because they know that, if they don& #39;t, their work is going to pile up and it will be very overwhelming. This happens to some students anyway, even in classes where there ARE late work penalties.
In fact, those penalties often make a student LESS LIKELY to complete work, because they feel like, well, what& #39;s the point?
Students understand that deadlines exist. They understand that consequences exist. Their whole life is deadlines and consequences. They don& #39;t need to learn that "lesson" from me, their 9th grade English teacher.
My job is to assess their learning. Grades are supposed to be a reflection of their understanding of the content.
Not all kids have great executive functioning skills. Not all kids have amazing, peaceful home lives. Not all kids can spend their evenings doing homework.

I will not punish a kid -- and literally hurt their options for college and career -- by "teaching them a lesson" because they weren& #39;t able to meet some deadline I made up.
Finally, there ARE some deadlines that are unavoidable, and kids get that. I have to submit a grade at the end of the quarter. You& #39;ve got to get your work to me by then. They understand. But if you turn in an A+ essay, you still deserve an A+.
K, lunch break over.
