A thread: Here& #39;s a look at @GoUpstate stories over the past several months focused on racial issues in this community.
This summer, residents came to a City Council meeting asking that the city apologize for its role in urban renewal in the 70s. https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2020/08/28/citys-past-treatment-black-communities-prompts-calls-changes/5621448002/">https://www.goupstate.com/story/new...

In the same meeting where residents asked for the apology, comments made by Spartanburg Mayor Junie White drew backlash and triggered protests. Some now wanted to him apologize as well. https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2020/09/02/protesters-plan-demand-spartanburg-sc-apologize-racist-past-sc-mayor-junie-white/5683407002/">https://www.goupstate.com/story/new...
A small crowd gathered outside Junie White& #39;s service station on Pine St. asking that he apologize for his comments. Some held signs asking that he resign. They also used the protest to push the city to adopt a resolution apologizing for its racist history https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2020/09/05/local-protest-held-against-spartanburg-mayor-junie-whites-comments/5680828002/">https://www.goupstate.com/story/new...
After telling @Goupstate reporters on several occasions that he stood by his comments, Junie White apologized in a public meeting three weeks later. Meanwhile, comments made by another council member while defending the Mayor drew ire. She apologized also https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2020/09/16/spartanburg-mayor-apologizes-past-comments-black-resident/5807605002/">https://www.goupstate.com/story/new...
Meanwhile, as the city moved toward an apology, Sheriff Chuck Wright took heat from the Black community for saying that his deputies had every right to shoot two Black people. He, however, refused to apologize. https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2020/09/18/spartanburg-county-sheriff-chuck-wright-under-fire-how-he-handled-case/5826035002/">https://www.goupstate.com/story/new...
All of this happens, by the way, as a new group emerges to fight against racial inequities in the community. via @GennaContino. https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2020/09/18/spartanburg-new-nonprofit-siren-sounds-alarm-racial-inequity/3472030001/">https://www.goupstate.com/story/new...
On September 28, the Spartanburg City Council became the first in S.C. to pass a resolution acknowledging its racist past and apologizing to Black residents. The vote received a standing ovation from the crowd. https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2020/09/28/unanimous-passage-resolution-spartanburg-apologizes-black-residents/3533603001/">https://www.goupstate.com/story/new...
Still, while several lauded the council for such a "momentous" action, some were left wondering: Why now? https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2020/10/01/city-spartanburg-sc-makes-history-being-first-state-apologize-black-residents-racist-past/5874929002/">https://www.goupstate.com/story/new...
And my latest story: The city council spent more than three months hashing out this apology resolution behind the scenes. Emails show some disagreements, and an early attempt to remove the apology from the document. https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2020/10/09/emails-show-some-early-disagreements-regarding-council-resolution/5901749002/">https://www.goupstate.com/story/new...
