Big oof, why do I feel like I know what country this is wwwww https://twitter.com/AITA_reddit/status/1313942117304205312">https://twitter.com/AITA_redd...
Anyways vaguing aside, if this is rly SG then I think I understand why the speaker+teachers reacted like that... This is obviously not gonna be everyone& #39;s experience, but back in sec school there were various jokes by the teachers about how we need to find a–
"rich handsome husband and handle his finances" and that we can& #39;t do that if we can& #39;t pass maths. Lots of teachers, even the women, made the same joke, and everyone laughed it off bc a lot of the girls rly did want to go in that direction anyways (study for the sake of it and–
then marry). This isn& #39;t a defense for misogyny obvsly, and there are obvsly also hard working girls who wanted to start a career (who were supported by the same teachers who made those jokes), but I think a lot of the context for this AITA is lost bc of the cultural difference
Tbh I think the speaker should have shut his mouth, considering that he doesn& #39;t know his audience personally and therefore touchy jokes like that are obvsly not gonna resonate well (touchy jokes never go well unless you know the person well tbh)
But I also think that the student should have made a more intelligent reply rather than a one liner so that it could open discussion regarding women in STEM, which would have been beneficial for everyone involved in the talk
