Amharic, a language spoken by at least 21M people in the world, and the official language of Ethiopia ㅡ a thread
The writing system is called fidäl (ፊደል) in Ethiopian Semitic languages. Fidäl means "alphabet", "letter"or "character". Each character represents a consonant+vowel sequence, but the basic shape of each character is determined by the consonant, which is modified for the vowel.
Not only Amharic has its own alphabet, but also its own set of punctuation marks.
I also forgot to mention that the Geʽez (ግዕዝ), the script used to write Amharic, also has its own set of alpha numerals too!
Amharic has been used since the establishment of the Solomonic dynasty in 1270, but it was Emperor Haile Selassie who declared Amharic Ethiopia’s official language. It belongs to the Semitic group of the Afro-Asiatic family of languages and as such is related to Arabic and Hebrew
Its such a beautiful and intricate language. The literary works in Amharic are one the best.
