Hi, I& #39;m going to provide an update/rant again. I& #39;m so stressed and exhausted, I don& #39;t know how I& #39;m going to keep up this pace for another 8 months. A typical day for me starts at 6:30-6:45, when I arrive at school. This doesn& #39;t include my hour long commute in LR traffic. /1
I get to school an hour and a half before classes start, so that I can make sure lessons are uploaded, videos are made, virtual students are emailed to keep up with communication, and then that communication is documented. Classes start at 8 and run till 3. I have about 50 min /2
Of prep a day. I have two different classes to teach, one of which is new to me so I& #39;m having to create everything for this class from scratch (I& #39;m too poor to afford teachers pay teachers). I& #39;m also expected to make accomodations for my 504, IEP, and ELL kids, and document /3
The accommodations made for each student. During class, I am trying to teach a lesson to on-site students (class sizes range from 7-19 of just kids in class) while answering emails and comments from virtual students. I am also trying to teach them how to use their devices, and /4
Having to walk around and monitor the room to ensure the students are completing the work. My classes are not socially distanced, it isn& #39;t possible. When I have to walk around I am putting myself at risk due to the closeness to the students, but there isn& #39;t a way around this. /5
Then, after the lesson is over, it& #39;s time for independent practice. The students are begging for group work, but seeing as we have to keep seating charts for contact tracing, this is next to impossible. During work time, I am trying to juggle helping online students with /6
Helping virtual students. This means I have to go between walking around the room, and getting to my computer to answer emails and check comments. I have to sanitize my hands each time I touch a students device, and before I touch my own. I also spend a lot of time asking kids /7
To wear their masks correctly. They know by now how to wear the masks, over their mouth and nose, but not all teachers are enforcing this. Some are even allowing them to remove masks during class. We are also allowing students and teachers to wear neck gaiters and valved masks /8
Despite the CDC and ADH saying this is against guidelines. So, at the end of class I have to ask the students to get up and move away from their desks so that I can sanitize them. I am once again in close contact with the students, and they are not social distancing either. /9
I would sanitize the desks between classes when no students are in my room, but I& #39;m not able to. For one, I must stand in the hallway to monitor student activity. Two, I have students in my room still packing up and arriving from classes just across the hall. For this same /10
Reason I don& #39;t have time to go to the bathroom between classes, so there are only 4 opportunities throughout the day for me to use the bathroom. This is an every day problem, but now it is worse since there is no social distancing in the bathrooms. So, after teaching all day /11
I try to leave my classroom at 3:15-3:30 to beat the traffic home. Noticed how I haven& #39;t gotten to any talk about planning future lessons or grading assignments? That& #39;s because I don& #39;t have time during the week for these activities. I spend the majority of my time teaching, /12
Helping students, communicating, or documenting communication. So when does the planning and grading happen? You guessed it, on the weekends. Last weekend I worked for 12 hours on Saturday (would have been longer if not for my personal life getting in the way) and another /13
8 hours on Sunday. I was supposed to go to a funeral for a family friend on Sunday, but I decided not to go in favor of working more, and being terrified of getting anyone possibly sick if I have been exposed at school. With those hours put in on the weekend, I still didn& #39;t /14
Have all of my lessons for the week planned, or any grading finished. So, I am going to be playing catch up on grading this whole week, in the hopes that I will have more time this weekend to spend planning. I haven& #39;t seen any family since the 3rd week of August. I missed a /15
Funeral for an important person in my life due to unrealistic expectations and my unnecessary exposure to the virus at work. I am keeping a log of how many hours I work each day, I will be sure to post my total at the end of the week. Please share this. People need to know.
