For my fellow grad students that are thinking about their future careers and jobs post-degree, here& #39;s a thread about resources I& #39;ve accessed @uofg, and what I& #39;ve been learning as I& #39;ve struggled for over a year to find work. #ScienceJobs #ScienceTwitter #AcademicTwitter 1/
@uofg, there are loads of amazing resources to help you learn how to improve your skills and sell yourself for all types of jobs. I& #39;ve tweeted about this before, but @uglibrary is absolutely incredible. Even now during Covid, they are available. 2/
I& #39;ve had meetings with @uglibrary to help me practice and improve my oral presentation and writing skills. I attended their dissertation bootcamp to help me be successful in completing my thesis. And I& #39;ve had one on one meetings with them to help me with my dissertation plans. 3/
@uofg also gives students access to the @BeyondProf website, where I& #39;ve learned a lot about applying for #postac and non-academic career paths, networking and informational interviews. In my experience, it is really important who you know and work with to land a job. 4/
@BeyondProf is not advertised enough, at least in our department @IntUGrativeBiol and our college @UofGCBS. They have content and interviews from professionals for all types of jobs. I particularly found their government job content helpful. 5/
Today, I had a meeting with our @UofGCBS career advisor @ExpGuelph, Julia Leary, to discuss what I need to adjust in my job search and applications to help me be successful. I didn& #39;t even know that we had career services @uofg that was relevant for grad students. 6/
Julia was extremely knowledgeable and if you need guidance on any part of the job searching stage, she is available to help. @ExpGuelph We discussed continuing to expand my network and to reach out to have conversations and informational interviews 7/
