a strange man, a lot of people would call him crazy, or also a genius. When Erik Satie died, in the 1st of July lots of his friends found a collection of umbrellas, with literally HUNDREDS of them, and a collection of scarves. he had like dozens of identical velvet suits and +
drawings of medieval buildings, and sheets of paper with annotations saying misterious things just like & #39;& #39;Hello, my name is Erik Satie, like everyone else& #39;& #39;.
But the astonishing is that all of this was found in his department, just as two out of tune and strung pianos, and one of then was being used as a wardrobe for letters (YES)
Satie could be seen as a really sad and lonely man, but the most part of his cards were to his only love: Suzanne Valadon, that he would never send to her. She is known to be the only girlfriend Satie ever had!
When Suzane Valadon broke up with him, he became really depressed, and he would write that the end of his relationship would made him & #39;& #39;flooded by a glacial loneliness that fills the head with emptiness and the heart with sadness& #39;& #39;.
After studying in a music conservatory, Satie established a bohemian life, playing in cafรฉs and cabarets. He also made hundred of pieces to the french singer Paulette Darty. I love this one, even though Satie would call it & #39;& #39;coarse crap& #39;& #39;. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbT9DeULzU4">https://www.youtube.com/watch...
Some time later, Satie would publish his most famous pieces: The Trois Gymnopรฉdies, The Trois Sarabandes and the Trois Gnossiennes. I& #39;m going to talk a bit about how i feel about the trois gymnopรฉdies, because I love them so much.
The first gymnopรฉdie... Oh... It feels like the winter came. Everything is cold, freezing. But why do I still feel warm somehow? May it be my heart? I don& #39;t think so. Something makes me keep going on, even when I& #39;m freezing, wanting to give up. +
The second gymnopรฉdie... I am scared. I feel like everyone forgot me. But I also have a certain pleasure in knowing that... Am I really alone? I have myself after all... I shouldn& #39;t feel scared. Everything will be fine.+
The third gymnopรฉdie... I can feel the melancholy... It& #39;s trying to turn into happiness... But somehow it can& #39;t. It& #39;s delicate... Thorough. I only want to be heard.
Well... This was more of a poetic point of view but I felt like to share it. I kinda forgot to put the pieces in the tweets, but I& #39;ll put it later, when I finish the thread. Going back to Satie, where were we? Ah right... After starting to have some recognition, he did something+
That would change his life. He met Claude Debussy. It& #39;s said it was Satie that would make Debussy stop liking Wagner, to create a own style of his. We would say & #39;& #39;Listen to what I say! No more Wagner! It& #39;s beautiful but it& #39;s not ours!& #39;& #39;. In its turn, Debussy would actually spread
Satie& #39;s work, arranging the Trois Gymnopรฉdies for orchestra. Now something weird of Satie. I bet almost none of you knew he literally had a CHURCH for some time+
Both Satie and Debussy joined the Order of the Rose Cross. The religious aspect, that would lean to the esoteric, didn& #39;t have much impact in Debussy works, but in Satie, it could be more notorious, so much that he became chapel master of the church. That can be seen in this piece
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vkKvFFEe2Q">https://www.youtube.com/watch... (i hope you enjoy it, it& #39;s very beautiful)
You must be thinking: & #39;& #39;Yeah, that& #39;s not weird, he joined a church and that& #39;s all& #39;& #39; Nope. He didn& #39;t stop there. He was a very disobedient guy, and he broke with the church, making him found his own church. YES, HIS OWN CHURCH. It was called+
& #39;& #39;L& #39; ร‰glise Mรฉtropolitaine d& #39;Art de Jรฉsus Conducteur& #39;& #39; or the & #39;& #39;Metropolitan Art Church of Jesus the Conductor& #39;& #39;. Maybe I& #39;ll do a thread talking only about it, but he was high priest of his own church and its only believer. His goal was to create a+
& #39;& #39;haven where catolicism and the arts that are bound to it could grow and thrive away from any desecration& #39;& #39;. In these times he would get dressed as a priest and would compose more religious pieces, like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5RJvvE3koE">https://www.youtube.com/watch...
(btw Satie as a priest)
Ok, after some time, Satie would stop acting like a priest, and would give up of the misticism and the religiosity of his life. Now he would take a really different path: He would join the politics world. He would become a militant of a socialist French party (SFIO)+
And would get involved in carity action for workers children. Later, he would become a communist, but when a friend would offer him an edition of The Capital (Karl Marx), he would say: & #39;& #39;I don& #39;t like this dull shits& #39;& #39;.
Well, this thread is really long, so I& #39;ll jump the rest of the adult life of Satie and will go straight to the end. If you have any curiosities or doubts, you can ask me, and I tell you the part of his life I didn& #39;t write here!
After years having serious alcohol addiction problem, Satie would be the victim of a cirrhosis, and it& #39;s said that he died drunk. Some say his last words were & #39;& #39;Ah, the cows...& #39;& #39; Others say they were: & #39;& #39;I& #39;m coming back next year for my mixtape album...& #39;& #39; Well, I guess we+
won& #39;t know exactly what he said. As final considerations, I really thank you for reading until here. It was my first thread and was really amazing doing it. Thank you sou much!
