An Italian aroace activist started a petition to ask @Treccani, one of the most important Italian encyclopedias, to add the definition of asexuality as a sexual orientation. Unfortunately, Treccani added an incorrect definition :( (2/?)
"Che, chi è privo di interesse per le relazioni sessuali e dichiara di non sentire bisogno di praticarle." = "asexual: who has no interest in sexual intercourse and declares they don& #39;t need to have it", more or less.
(3/?)
We know ecyclopedias work this way: when they add a new term, they look for instances that show how that term is used. (4/?)
It& #39;s true Treccani didn& #39;t pick the best instances: there& #39;s no trace of articles written by actual ace activists and most quoted articles date back to when asexuality was still considered a disorder (before 2013 - a quoted article dates back to 2004!) (5/?)
But the problem is deeper than that. The (sad) truth is, most information in italian you can easily access online is.. how do I put this? GARBAGE.
The first page of EVERY search engine is flooded by clickbait articles which spread misinformation. (6/?)
WHY AM I TELLING YOU THIS?
Because I know being misrepresented is something the whole asexual and aromantic communities have to face, everywhere. But I also want to ask AVEN for help.
(7/?)
Dear AVEN ( @asexuality),
here in Italy we have a BIG problem with misinformation about the aroace community. The fact that the Italian AVEN section is run by elitist and gatekeeping people DOESN& #39;T HELP.
(8/?)
AVEN should be the most reliable source of information about asexuality. If a journalist decided to interview an Italian AVEN admin, they would probably write an article about how graysexuality doesn& #39;t exist and if you have or like sex YOU ARE NOT ACE.
This is unacceptable.
(9/?)
Please help us make a change!
We want better information and representation for the asexual and aromantic communities.

Want to know what asexuality and aromanticism are?
Ask us. We know better ;)
