UMN fertilizer guidelines: designed to help a crop maximize yield. If you have another (cover) crop out there, you may short your cash crop. -Dan Kaiser
If fertilizer is only applied every 1 or 2 years, when& #39;s the best time for fertilizer applications relative to cover crops? Depends on your CC goals: for forage productivity, apply fertilizer beforehand. But there may be a delay in release as CC decomposes.
UMN N credits don& #39;t apply to cover crops- they assume at least 1 year of growth. -Dan Kaiser @UMNNutrientMgmt
We hear a lot about C:N cutoff for N mineralization- applies to sulfur too! for S it& #39;s 200-400 C:S
Within a month, 80% of cover crop N was released. But, it& #39;s not necessarily plant-available nitrate.
Where does N go after a cover crop? there& #39;s actually quite a few options. -Dan Kaiser @UMNNutrientMgmt
