My Dad has spent a fortune updating his pub; he had removed the pool tables to create a big lounge beside the long bar, and has divided up the snug with partitions (the way it should be, he says). He’s had builders in and will have to pay them now, with no money coming in at all
He’s 81, says he doesn’t know when or if he’ll open the doors again. The VFI does them no favours imho, just painting all of them as greedy, but Da has few trusted staff and he’s worried about losing permanently & friends he might not see again
It’s not all about the money. A lot of the pubs affected are local social hubs. They’re afraid to reopen, they don’t want to get sick either. Some of them have huge mortgages, some are all paid up, but are all the owner/family has and worthless for resale now.
Because publicans have families too and want to leave something behind for their children or grandchildren after all their hard work, and it is very hard work.
Just to clarify, the pub is the only premises/shop in the village and a food truck would need a guaranteed, minimum take to open on the site.
And here, because you sometimes need to state the obvious on here, he doesn’t want to open unless it’s safe to do so
