let’s start off with Zoe’s first appearance on the show. she’s introduced as a mean girl who wants to date the “hottest guy” on her grade & be on top. also her first scene shows us she has suddenly come to this school bc she has some sort of secret background (similarities

later in the season we find out she’s trying to get a fresh start.
with quinn we see her ‘lucy’ backstory & with zoe it is revealed she was struggling with drugs. both of their secrets come out eventually. the thing is, quinn’s storyline was dropped after one episode +

from the beginning, even though she’s presented as a villain, we realise zoe acts the way she does because she has insecurities due to her mom wanting her to be a perfect daughter and always doing what she wants to make her happy. we see this storyline grow through the seasons.
while with quinn everything is solved in 1x22, her mom apologises to her and everything seems perfect since we never visit that storyline again and never gets mentioned when clearly it was something that had bothered her for many years
for the most important storyline.
zoe’s assault was actually treated as an assault and not romanticised at all.

this show does demonstrate that even when teenagers aren’t educated on this stuff at first something feels off on situations like this. after zoe figures out what is actually wrong and confronts her abuser this storyline grows and is addressed with the importance it needs.
as it should’ve been with puck and quinn because she deserved way better than what she got.

we know a big part of quinn’s life was cheerleading, same with zoe.
they both emphasise how important it is to them that they belong somewhere and that it makes them popular, especially quinn

with zoe we get to see how she has a better understanding of how this is actually so big for her because she doesn’t have that many people in her life, including family. this has so much to do with her insecurities, same for quinn.
also a big part of quinn’s character is her love for this discipline and how much it meant to her to be head cheerleader and we never actually got to see her do it ???
