Fave anecdote from “Colonial Project, National Game” by Andrew Morris was that at least initially with foreign players joining the CPBL, teams would give them Chinese names that quickly evolved into advertisements for corporate sponsors. Thread 1/5
The Mercuries Tigers owned a restaurant chain and named their players after noodle dishes. Cesar Mejia and Rafael Valdez got the nicknames Qiaofu and Quanjiafu.
Lions (partially owned by 7-11) nicknamed Aguedo Vasquez and Revelo Manzanillo, Shengmaige and Baiwei for San Miguel Beer and Budweiser.
China Time Eagles nicknamed Steve Stowel, Meile (Miller Beer) and Jose Gonzalez, Meilehei (Miller Dark). (Gonzales is of Afro-Dominican descent, so facepalm there).
