I was contemplating if I should say anything, but I think this so abusive that it deserves attention, so here goes. If you& #39;re unaware of the recent dumpsterfire on science twitter start here, check out the linked threads, too. https://twitter.com/endlesswario/status/1290062477657436161">https://twitter.com/endlesswa...
All this is so bad, on so many levels. It is using minorities as props to gain something, from attention to faked support to money (read the whole thread, she says it better than I do, obviously) https://twitter.com/elissawashuta/status/1290131831069630465">https://twitter.com/elissawas...
It is feeding the racist "you can& #39;t have achieved that" attitude. "See, that one was fake, too! We& #39;re right to be suspicious!"

There are enough ppl dying of Covid, you don& #39;t need to fake one. Faking gives an excuse to the "skeptics" who do not want to take this seriously. "See, this is faked, too!". https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2020/06/23/cuny-system-suffers-more-coronavirus-deaths-any-other-higher-ed-system-us">https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2020...
And we all know how strong the "we& #39;re tired of listening to the experts" side is. This feeds into that: "What do they know, this was a lie & they bought it, haha!"
(Not accusing ppl who thought they could trust this person, we can all be manipulated).
(Not accusing ppl who thought they could trust this person, we can all be manipulated).
Then there& #39;s the individual pain caused. And not just for ppl who thought their friend died, but to the minorities, already suffering more from Covid, & the ones in the long haul group, thinking they lost one of their own, again. Perhaps someone they knew.
Then there& #39;s the whole me too stem thing. Using a sock account to get vulnerable ppl to trust you? And again, giving ammunition to "why should we believe anyone, this wasn& #39;t real either"-folks.
I didn& #39;t deal w/ this person, so why am I tweeting about this? Because I think we should hold ourselves & each other accountable, even if we& #39;re not directly involved. Because it& #39;s important to acknowledge the damage things like this do.
