Unpopular opinion: I don& #39;t believe in harsher sentences for so-called "hate crimes" nor in the shunning or punishment of homophobic people. Violence is already illegal, and I don& #39;t need everyone to love me nor to approve of my orientation.
If someone says "being gay is unnatural & gross," it doesn& #39;t make me feel any sort of way. People are allowed their opinions, even ones I think are shitty. I& #39;ll just think they& #39;re wrong without feeling the need to silence or shun them, as long as they& #39;re otherwise respectful.
Why? Because having opinions most consider backwards doesn& #39;t make someone a terrible person, and ruining their lives over it isn& #39;t going to suddenly make them change their mind — the opposite is far more likely, in fact.
Something that& #39;s very lacking lately is the ability to disagree with people without having a nervous breakdown, flying into a rage or treating them like garbage. It& #39;s easy showing charity and empathy to those your agree with; the real test is being kind to people you loathe.
