just thinking about how the invisible workforces of the porn industry that often go underpaid/unacknowledged, the ghosts in our machine, are the performers who quit after a very short time, and the significant others who do incalculable hours of behind the scenes work
they are truly the grist that keeps this ol& #39; wheel turning, and at times some of the most exploited people in the industry. neither group can organize effectively, and the quality of working conditions in porn varies wildly depending on location, type of content, and so on
porn is really decentralized and unstandardized, which is a draw in some ways bc of the flexibility, but i think a lot of people aren& #39;t protected or compensated the way they should be and it can lead to negative situations
my wife worked without a wage for years, doing camera, editing, uploading, etc. we shared all the income and i always thought of us as business partners doing front of house/back of house, but she was still building MY brand which is ultimately my asset and mine alone
if something had happened to me, or if i was an asshole and cut her off, she would have nothing to show for all that hard work and no recourse. sadly this kind of thing happens all the time. some SO& #39;s have other jobs and are mostly unaffected, but for full timers it& #39;s devastating
and then theres the yearly crop of midwest 18-20 year olds who take a shot at porn, do a few scenes, make their money, and quit. there is a constant flow of these performers in and out, and unfortunately they often serve as scabs preventing career performers from organizing
a lot of the time they just don& #39;t know and are being played, but damn like how do u advocate for yourself when you& #39;re competing with 20 girls who will do a B/G scene for $400 and then move back to ohio to go to massage therapy school within a month?
and how do you actually reach people like that and tell them what their rights are on set, what the rates are for established talent, etc? and make them care about bettering the industry? oof, it& #39;s a tough nut to crack. same with SO& #39;s, like how do u organize against ur gf?
anyway, i salute the hard working SO& #39;s and short timers of the porn industry, you don& #39;t get what you deserve but i see you
