To develop @thomaswright08 point a little, here& #39;s the key strategic fact about US-China competition. As recently as 15 years ago, US economy was 3x China& #39;s. Today, the two economies are roughly par 1/x
The days when the US alone could constrain China are over. US can hope to constrain an economically equal China *only* by working with partners: European Union, Japan, India, Vietnam, etc.

Trump/Pompeo have never been realistic about the China/US power balance.
And Pompeo in particular has never understood that "be an obnoxious jerk to everybody" is a radically counter-productive approach to any human activity, but diplomacy more than most.
