"All Things Shining" explored how notions of sacredness and meaning have evolved throughout the history of human culture. They were specifically worried about the endpoint in our current era 3/n
"The world used to be, in its various forms, a world of sacred, shining things. The shining things now seem far away." 4/n
What happened between then and now? Descartes. The sceptical and radical belief that individual seeking certainty trumped a God or king bestowing truth. This lead to the Enlightenment, human rights, and freedom from oppression 5/n
In a post-Enlightenment world we task OURSELVES to identify what& #39;s meaningful and what& #39;s not, and exercise that can seem arbitrary and induce a creeping nihilism 6/n
They worried it "leads not just to a boring life, it leads almost inevitably to a nearly unlivable one." 7/n
One of their answers was craftsmanship. Deep work. Committing oneself. This is what you see Marcelo Bielsa as he makes football sacred. The players are his beloved tools, and the game is his sacred wood. 8/n
When players say "believe in the process", this is the very essence of craftsmanship. It& #39;s a way to create something like shining. 9/n
