It is likewise insane to deny that, esp in light of the US’s cruel failure to recognize a right to be forgotten, that “cancellation” (rightful or wrongful) is often life-ruining. Criticism isn’t censorship, but in some forms, it veers towards harassment 2/
I can understand why you might think that “cancellation” is instrumentally good because of the goals it enables us to realize, intrinsically good (if you’re a retributivist), or bad but outweighed by the good of the movements it facilitates 3/
What I can’t understand is scratching your head and pretending like you don’t think it happens or matters 4/
Regardless of your political affiliations, if you have any interest in how the internet is altering human society and experience, you should start by acknowledging the most basic facts of life online 5/
