All of that is great. But we have a "What happens to kids who cannot access resources at home no matter how many there are" current abuse problem & I feel like people are ignoring the kids who disappeared from schools virtual or otherwise this year. They can& #39;t wait. https://twitter.com/BeauWillimon/status/1282730586138914821">https://twitter.com/BeauWilli...
I don& #39;t love the idea of schools completely reopening. But we need a better plan than "Fix these systems" because we have no replacement in any culture that doesn& #39;t require people gathering together. We came up with settlement houses & orphanages & so on because social species
I& #39;m all in on building new systems but please understand the severity of abuse in the cases that make it to a hospital has increased. Reports are down because there is no way to report. Kids are in current danger. They can& #39;t wait two to five years for a new system to be built.
The best things I have seen are hybrid systems because it allows for some socialization (needed for development) academic support (needed) & social distancing. Essential workers have kids who can& #39;t be neglected while they work & aging out of daycare isn& #39;t aging out of childcare
We are in an excellent place for fall. We can support kiddo academically & he& #39;s old enough to understand what is going on. But I need people to step outside of themselves & ask how many places are balancing low/no budgets for kids in need & increased rates of violence now.
America already had a violence epidemic & a lot of kids are missing everything from their educational access to food security already. No school/only virtual school this fall means more kids who are barely hanging on don& #39;t make it.
So yes, arguments to reopen school with no options for hybrid plans are terrible. But the motivation to partially reopen schools in some capacity isn& #39;t rooted in bad faith. Kids aren& #39;t going on a shelf until we figure this out. And they need current systems as a bridge.
