What is AAVE? And why should nonblack people avoid using it?
A small thread.
+ if I have anything wrong please do correct me IF you are black+
AAVE stands for African American Vernacular English that can go by many other names such as AAE, BE, and BEV. It can also be referred to as Ebonics, however, that word is very uncommon nowadays for many reasons.
AAVE is a dialect and no it is not improper english! It has an entirely different sentence structure than mainstream english.
It came about in the South and like the name sugguests it was made by the enslaved Africans in the South.
Examples of AAVE:

“They be”
“Finna”
“Imma”
“Tryna”
“Ain’t never” (double negatives work within AAVE)
“It’s a man at the door to see you”
It has a lengthy history within the Black American community and to use it as a nonblack person borders being offensive. It is important and vital to the community it also is used to mock black people by people who view it as improper english.
Just because you see people use this type of Vernacular english on the timeline does not mean you should mirror the behavior. You do NOT understand the roots of it and you cannot begin to artificially acquire it from online. Its something you need to be born into if anything.
It creates a very uncomfortable environment for black stans to be surrounded by people making a mockery of a dialect they use semi-daily. Especially when we have to code switch to be taken seriously.
Bonus AAVE word yall use: chile
I have expressed how this made me uncomfortable before and had a white mutual continue to do it because “its not a big deal”. Its a big deal because when I do it I’m uneducated and ghetto but when you do it you are trendy and cool. THATS the difference between us.
Heres another list i found!!
Im muting but thank you for reading this! I will NOT be arguing over how this inconviences you or how you feel as a nonblack person!! Please consider changing your vocabulary if you use these words as a nonblack person. bye!! <3
