no ‘Meleis’ is definitely not a slur because it’s not attached to any form of derogatory political oppression. but unfortunately, the ideological divide in malaysia is still a class divide, and continuing to use this term isn’t going to bridge tht divide in any way
my girlfriend also mentioned tht urban Malays using ‘Meleis’ conveniently detaches ourselves from ‘that type of Malay’, even though (a) we benefit frm the same systemic racism and (b) absent our educational and economic backgrounds, we would probably be holding the same views
