The underlying problem is with the cop culture that indoctrinates them to believe they are at war with the general population. The "them vs us" mentality needs to be ripped out by the roots. If you arent willing to place the safety of citizens/detainees ahead your own, then quit.
They are trained to believe that anytime they go out on patrol could be there last and that they are to do whatever is necessary to go home to their families.
