Education isn& #39;t just what happens in schools. Today& #39;s children are learning a lot right now: how to make the most of an awful situation, how to maintain connections with people you can& #39;t see in person, how to share space with others at home 1/? https://twitter.com/Andrew_Adonis/status/1260289672955256832">https://twitter.com/Andrew_Ad...
Many will be learning / doing housework, shopping for the household, helping with gardening/DIY. Many will be getting really good at independent learning for the sake of learning - time to explore things they find interesting. 2/?
Many will be learning a healthy skepticism of the govt / media / other sources of information. Some may be finding exercise they enjoy [school PE lets many down]. Some may be having to take on increased responsibilities - and there *are* times when this is wrong 3/?
but there many occasions where this is a helpful step towards independence. A very few children will be in abusive situations and deliberately being not sent to school with COVID as & #39;cover& #39;. For none of these children is it helpful to suggest they& #39;re missing out on education 4/?
They& #39;re learning many of the things that cannot be taught in school and what they are missing they can catch up on in due course. Schools have always been able to educate children known to be in vulnerable circumstances. 5/?
A maybe sensible move this year would be to encourage current Y10s who have had very disrupted work this year to restart Y10 in September and take two full years for their GCSEs - now feasible as education compulsory to 18, but even that relies on schools being safe in Sept 6/?
Repeating years is generally a bad move and rarely helps kids with SEN. Repeating an examination year is one of the exceptions when thinking about SEN. Most Y10 will be OK, but for those who& #39;ve particularly struggled, worth making it an easy option for teenagers + families. 7/?
The only way to insist on a child being placed outside the correct year group is for this to be specified provision in Section F of an EHCP, which is too burdensome for this purpose (aside from general issues with EHCPs anyway) and LAs have reduced duties to implement for now 8/?
And yes, I think similar re repeating Y12 where someone& #39;s education has been very disrupted due to illness/caring responsibilities/lack of tech/space/time to learn at home, but means not finishing Y13 till 19. 9/9
