For the past 3 weeks I’ve been coordinating volunteers w/ @UNITEHERE11 & @UCLA Law’s Labor & Economic Justice Clinic to help union members claim their rightful benefits assisting them in filing UI applications. Here& #39;s a thread about the work we& #39;ve been doing and ways to support!
#COVID19 is hitting the service industry especially hard. As business pauses in hotels, convention centers, sports and event venues, casinos, and restaurants, working families face layoffs and uncertainty. https://www.propublica.org/article/inside-the-union-where-coronavirus-puts-98--of-members-out-of-work">https://www.propublica.org/article/i...
The layoffs are devastating communities in Southern California and across the country. These are people not just numbers. People with hopes and dreams like Local 11& #39;s member, Racquel Lezama. https://twitter.com/UNITEHERE11/status/1245833768574697475?s=20">https://twitter.com/UNITEHERE...
So what can you do to help? We are in urgent need of more volunteers who can help members fill out applications, especially, but not exclusively, Spanish speakers. If you are able to volunteer any time please send me a DM and I& #39;ll give you the details!
If you can’t volunteer, we are additionally soliciting funds for an Emergency Hospitality Worker Hardship Fund for workers who are not eligible to receive UI benefits. https://www.cluejustice.org/unite_here_hospitality_workers_covid19">https://www.cluejustice.org/unite_her...
Finally, if you aren’t in a position to volunteer or donate, please RT this thread for people who may be able to help in those other ways. Any support you can offer will help us materially support working-class families in a time of great need.
