What the long-term impact of Covid-19 will be on community strategies and events (a thread)
1. In-person events will return with a boom (after some initial hesitancy).
There will be new measures in place to make sure people can stay safe and healthy. These new measures may become as ubiquitous as the TSA became after 9/11. We’ll adapt. And we’ll get back to gathering.

2. Smaller local events will return first, conferences will have to wait until 2021
2020 is a wash for conferences. Too risky. Switch to virtual, and start planning for 2021. With luck, you’ll be able to kick off smaller local events again in the fall.

3. Virtual events will still be a thing.
The truth is companies were sleeping on the value of virtual events for years, and now everyone’s getting a crash course.
They cost much less, and scale more.
I predict that companies will have a hybrid approach. They’ll be doing both.

4. Virtual gatherings will move beyond Zoom
Zoom has owned the virtual event narrative so far. But there will be Zoom fatigue.
Zoom also doesn& #39;t do a lot of what event organizers need.
Look for some big new players to come up in this space. A few already started.

5. The community industry will continue to boom but with increased focus on business value
This crisis has shone a BRIGHT light on the value of community. Everyone is getting on board.
But budgets will be tighter. And teams will have even more pressure to show ROI

6. Remote work will accelerate, creating increased need for employee-facing community managers
As more of the workforce moves online, companies will experience the challenge of keeping people engaged, and communicating, online.
Internal community managers will grow in demand.

7. Community teams will become a core part of every business
This crisis is taking community from a nice-to-have to a critical part of business.
This trend was happening already, but has been accelerated.
There will be short-term layoffs due to economics, but long-term growth.
