I wrote a book about conspiracy theories and I& #39;m quite familiar with the damage that misinformation can do. Laws like this are counterproductive, as they only fuel distrust. And inevitably, the censorship regime will be used for crass political purposes. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/covid-misinformation-disinformation-law-1.5532325">https://www.cbc.ca/news/poli...
I& #39;m also genuinely creeped out by the way this Liberal government consistently is looking for ways to censor the marketplace of information. This is part of a trend, as they have been floating the idea of licensing media companies since last year.
It& #39;s also part of the progressive drumbeat that seeks to cast any form of political opposition as illegitimate. There are real lunatics out there who think coronavirus is caused by cell phone towers etc. but it& #39;ll take 2 mins for such laws to metastasize into broader censorship
The Liberals also poisoned the well by trying to capitalize on coronavirus to pass completely unjustified fiscal measures that would have given them unchecked spending power till the end of 2021. The mirror image of trump telling governors he has complete power over everyone
there was a period in late March when Theresa Tam was spouting known bad science on masks, out of some mixture of stubbornness and institutional inertia. That was disgraceful, but I certainly wouldn& #39;t want to see her arrested under this kind of law https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/covid-misinformation-disinformation-law-1.5532325">https://www.cbc.ca/news/poli...
