THREAD: How I started a magazine ( @huthezine)
One of the things I was most excited about as an incoming college freshman was finding my place and my people. I thought that going to a huge school guarantined that I would find a creative community that I really clicked with. That was not exactly the case.
I joined plenty of amazing organizations and made plenty of incredible friends (shoutout to my friends.. I miss you guys

Part of me wanted to start my own project and build that community myself, but that was too much for me to handle all by myself while pursuing a dual degree + a certificate and participating in all my other extracurriculars. It felt like an impossible dream. But then I met Cami.
(Actually, I’d briefly met Cami a few months earlier and we’d been following each other on ig since my first week of college. Check her out on ig @/picscma!)
We bumped into each other at an event on campus and both subtly and half-jokingly mentioned that we were thinking about starting our own magazines. We talked a little bit about joining forces, but honestly, I didn’t expect anything to come out of it.
And I still didn’t expect much when she asked me to talk about our ideas over coffee a couple days later. But half way through my matcha latte, I realized that this was actually happening and it was going to be great.
We reached out to everyone we knew and 2 weeks later, we had a full staff.
Here’s a drawing of our early staff (which has since doubled) by our graphics editor, Trent.

2 months later, we released our first mini zine, red: love vs. anger (which sold out at the release party!)
And our 2nd mini zine, yellow: growth vs. decay, is at the printer right now!

@huthezine has given me the sense of purpose and community that I’ve been craving, and I believe it has done the same for many others.
