I& #39;m getting ready to co-host a & #39;Water Cooler Chat& #39; today on student assessment during this crisis semester. I& #39;ve requested that it be captioned, and it will not be - therefore I& #39;m writing up my notes and resources to share below ahead of the start time (4pm EST today).
I asked if it could be captioned when archived, but they refuse to archive it to help ensure the conversation is welcoming and that people share openly. I do not agree with these choices given that synchronous meetings and inaccessibility are both barriers to inclusion
Why I am sharing this? Please make different choices when you organize and host events. (I tried to get my own captioner but in an accommodation framework instead of access framework, I can& #39;t without a named person & #39;in need& #39; of captioning)
If I had known it wouldn& #39;t be possible to ensure access in real time or after, I don& #39;t think I would have said yes. Although I do think the topic is critical (so many @Jessifer links to share for student-centered assessment!)
Conversations about inclusive approaches for students cannot be exclusive of the diversity of faculty. Whenever organizations refuse to consider access, they make clear they don& #39;t even imagine disabled professionals and faculty in their ranks.
