The young leaves of ferns are usually coiled into #croziers, and you& #39;ll be able to spot them easily at this time of year. Here& #39;s a selection from my garden #plantoftheday Dicksonia antartica (tree fern)
Dryopteris erythrosora (Japanese copper shield-fern) #croziers Lovely colour on the young leaves of this fern
Asplenium trichomanes (best vernacular name ever - maidenhair spleenwort) #croziers UK native, common on walls
Osmunda regalis (royal fern) #croziers - UK native, likes boggy conditions. The sori (where the spores are made) are the & #39;broccoli& #39; in this image.
Polystichum polyblepharum (Japanese tassel-fern - not to be confused with Huperzia: lycopods also called tassel & #39;ferns& #39;) #croziers
Asplenium scolopendrium (hart& #39;s tongue - the leaves of this one are the only UK native that is undivided, so an easy on to ID in the wild) #croziers
Matteuccia struthiopteris (shuttlecock fern - the species epithet means "ostrich feather") #croziers Native to Europe, naturalised in UK.
Arachniodes aristata & #39;Variegata& #39; (East Indian holly fern). Pretty fern, but the #croziers are a bit meh!
Athyriumniponicum pictum (Japanese painted lady-fern). I absolutely love these ferns - they have the most amazing colours - purple, metallic, just gorgeous #croziers
