Something interesting to me is how much better we learn things firsthand vs being told. I remember chasing the NJ PR throughout most of smash 4 and being told that it doesn& #39;t really matter. But I couldn& #39;t believe that, at the time I felt like I needed "proof" of my hard work by
Getting ranked when in reality there was no correlation. Getting ranked was super sick and everything (one of my proudest accomplishments) but once it happened, I realized *firsthand* why it isn& #39;t such a big deal to get ranked. Another example would be teaching someone a matchup
The best players in the world can tell you everything you need to know, but that usually isn& #39;t enough to actually *learn* the matchup. People can tell you and teach you a lot of things, but the best lessons are those that you teach yourself. A while ago i made a tweet listing the
Traits that I personally believe separate good players from great players, and the common aspect of all of them was that they couldn& #39;t be taught. You can& #39;t "teach" someone how to think down 3 stocks to 1. You can& #39;t "teach" adaptation. These things can only be learned firsthand
But this applies to most if not all parts of smash. Sure, someone could give you a list of combos for a character, but what& #39;s stopping you from finding something new? More importantly, how are you going to create and innovate your own style if you& #39;re being told how to play?
Everything comes with time. There is no "quick and easy" way to get good at smash. Yes, easy characters exist but at the end of the day it& #39;s you playing against someone else. I sometimes see a worse player make an upset, but that& #39;s not what makes you better or worse at the game
In reality it& #39;s very VERY difficult to tell how good someone is at this game. Sometimes I see a sick play, but wonder if it was intentional. In game, who cares? Attacks do the same thing whether they were intended or not. But I think it matters if someone meant to do something
Because it shows whether or not they KNEW what to do. I truly believe that smash is a very deep game but when people do well by mashing, it can be hard to see. I love smash as a whole and I constantly think about it, I just wish that some people could think about it more instead
