‘Koperasi Cina’ vs ‘Koperasi Melayu’

Chinese Co-op. VS Malay Co-op.

What do you know about them?
INTRO: Many don’t know that big portion of successful startup joins at least one successful co-op.

In order a person to be successful, the modus operation of a co-op need to be successful.

Co-op is like a bank. The bigger their fund, the more successful they’ll be.
The difference is, Co-op (or cooperation) IS NOT Bank. They’re NOT for profit but they give profit to their members.

There thousands of thousands of Co-op out there. It’s so big that it need to be regulated and govt has a ministry after it called @MEDACMalaysia.
While everyone literally ‘join’ any bank, Not everyone can be a member of a Co-op.

Co-op can be managed by a registered corporate OR by organizations/associations.

I put aside the technical on co-op because there’s other things more importants.
Why Chinese Co-op is more successful than Malay Co-op in general.

This is how they worked.
A Successful Malay Co-op normally managed by corporations. Their papers are audited like KPF (Koperasi Permodalan Felda). So literally everyone can see how they’re doing.

Members are Felda residents. They literally just handover everything to KPF.
Although some might attends annual meeting, the rest just Sit Backs and Relax.

KPF management will do everything. KPF is so successful that they’re top performing Co-op in Malaysia.

But there’s the things. Malay Co-op lacks involvement of their members.
INVOLVEMENT is the keyword.

Successful Co-op needs active involvement of their members to GENERATE Fund.

The money from the fund can be used to other members to generate other fund for the Co-op.

I’ll explain further.
Chinese Co-op starts small. So they have a chance to benefit all of it members. They’re managed by association.

Ever heard names like King Kong Associations? Names on top of building at cities and towns. That belongs to a Chinese association, which also a Co-op.
Some town has 2-3 associations. They’re so active. They meet almost every week. Mostly at night. Discuss about fund, money, issues.

Co-op managed by association is hard to track down. They may have papers needed as means of registration etc. But they have their own Money Vault.
That’s not a bad things though. After all that’s their fund money.

So how do the get so many Fund for their Co-op from such a small members?

Keyword is REPLICATION of modus operation from a successful Chinese Co-op Association.
This is how a successful Chinese Co-op association works.

1. They know each members and their needs. They may need to filter members for starters.

2. They’re Lead by a handful of successful Entrepreneur OR Businessperson. Or they can ‘borrow’ them.
3. All members will contribute fund to the co-op association. Big portion of fund money comes from the company of which their ceo are members of the co-op.

Now, what do they do with all the fund money? They GENERATE it.

Their concept is simple. But hard to implement.
Chinese Co-op will take care of their members, so the first things is to get membership to one - any Chinese association will do. Surely they won’t accept you if you’re not the same kind.

Although you have zero knowledge about business, don’t worry, they’ll help you.
Their concept is once you’re a member, they help you and give everything you need to be successful.

1. They’ll ask your intend and interest. What do you want? Opening a fish shop? Flower shop? Anything.

2. They asked how much money you need? 50k, 100k? Just like that.
3. They’ll ask whether you have knowledge to operate. If you don’t, they’ll assign someone as mentor. Those who looks after you.

4. Once you’re successful. As an appreciation, you’ll give back to Co-op. There is no pressure. Any amount will do.
The next question are:
Is the money given is a loan?
What if the the company is not successful?

A successful Chinese Co-op has a lot of fund money. They give money to members just like that. No pressure. You no need to pay back.

This give good impression to members.
Member got no obligation to pay because there’s no loan.

But members feels appreciated and will want to contribute more to the co-op association.

Unknowingly, their contributions exceeding the amount of money they received at start.
What if they fails?

No worry, the co-op will give you second chance.

They’ll asked you the familiars: What do you want? How much (maybe halves)? Do you have knowledge? Assigned good mentors.

If you fails the second time, they’ll stop helping you. Since you’re no use.
Since you’re making a business, failing is not an option. It’ll means death sentence.

Although you may not need to pay back the co-op, you’ll find hard time joining other co-op. They’ll know.

The cycle is MEMBER > GET FUND > GENERATE FUND > GIVE FUND > TO OTHER MEMBER.
Chinese Co-op associations will Replicate this. Make it universal practice.

Ever wonder why there’re so many brands and manufacturers of a product eg: Bihun? Because they share knowledge.

Let say a person cater for Ipoh, if you want to open the same at Bangi, they’ll teach you.
Good co-op operate at cellular level, meaning operate at the bottom for small people with good fund.

Ever heard such co-op at Malay co-op? You’ll probably can wish OR get assistance from government.

A Chinese won’t tell you this. It’s their secret.
Some Malay communities like the Kelantanese are good in business. They might have similar co-op, but I’m not sure whether they’re registered.

The next time you see car jammed park outside a Chinese Association building every week, then know how active their co-op is.
The Malakat initiative created by @ikatanmuslimin is a good starter for Malay Co-op. We can replicate Malakat success at lower level.

Make many Malay associations co-op give it any names. Filter members. Guide other to joins which co-op that fits. Good communication among co-op.
Malays can stop feeling jealous and hatred to other fellow Malays.

Stop going to bomoh whatsoever.
Stop manipulating good Malay co-op.
Stop taking advantages.

Our challenges are facing the World. Facing the enemy that brings us down.

Malay are strong together.
