1. After careful consideration, I have come to the conclusion that the old sages from the Desert Fathers to Thomas a Kempis were right: a profusion of words is not conducive to holiness. #Thread
2. Of course, I do not mean that we should all take a vow of silence. But there are far too many unprofitable arguments that we get drawn into - both online and in the flesh - in which the truth becomes subordinate to "scoring points", "owning the opponent" or showing off.
3. This does not mean that there should never be debate or discussion; rather, that it should be conducted in truth and in charity, and ideally by those who know what they are talking about.
4. Ignorance can make the most zealous or charitable debater look foolish; uncharitable conduct can make the wisest debater "a clanging cymbal" (1 Cor. 13)
5. Also, many debates and disputes in the open forums of today are often subtly or overtly instigated by third parties, who are either playing "Let& #39;s you and him fight" for their entertainment, manipulating the disputants, or both.
6. I have been guilty of reputation low on both truth and charity at times, and this must be read as a self-accusation foremost. I humbly apologize to any I have offended or scandalized by doing so.
7. Henceforth, rather than get into fruitless fights, I shall strive to pray for my "opponents", no matter how repugnant or false their views may seem to me. God bless you all.
