This is my (now deceased) grandfather, he was a navigator in Lancaster Bombers. He was shot down over Germany and spent time as a POW, escaped and recaptured. He thought the EU was the best and only way to secure peace in Europe.
A strong man, I still miss him.

From what I remember him saying, most of the crew perished, he had shrapnel in his “posterior” and when captured was taken to a hospital. He escaped by climbing down a rope of sheets. Captured , escaped again, recaptured. Released at the end of the war and made his way home.

Finding transport where he could, stealing bikes, and a fantastic story of staying in a deserted chateau that had been requisitioned by the Nazis. His parents, his partner or someone had saved his ration book and with this he acquired a box of Crunchie’s which for some reason he craved.
