Today’s the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend series finale (I’m not sad, you’re sad) and in order to distract myself from how sad that will make me, here’s a thread of my top ten favorite songs from the show
10. After Everything I’ve Done For You (That You Didn’t Ask For) - It’s hard to judge this out of context, because the power of this number stems not only from @DLChamplin’s insane singing, but from the season-long buildup to it. To this day, Paula’s turn takes my breath away
9. We’ll Never Have Problems Again - This one is just an awful lot of fun. Like, the music is catchy, the lyrics are super clever, and it works SO well thematically? This song perfectly summarizes season two Rebecca Bunch and I adore it. Also, Heather’s soul train? 10/10
8. Face Your Fears - I literally quote this song on a daily basis, I want Paula to give me terrible life advice through song
7. A Diagnosis - This one means a lot to me. The optimistic but completely understandable lyrics are only heightened by @Racheldoesstuff’s genuine, sweetly enthusiastic performance. It perfectly captures that familiar yet naive excitement for a possible end to mental illness
6. What’ll It Be? - Other than the fact that Santino Fontana always gave his best (and had all the best songs), this song, the first time we saw Greg be genuine and vulnerable, was a sign of how well the show could balance satire and honesty in a heartfelt Piano Man love letter
5. Settle For Me - A Crazy Ex-Girlfriend classic. The lyrics? The choreography? The Ginger and Fred homage? The depressingly relatable mood? AND the many thoughtful reprises throughout the show? Quality content
4. The End of the Movie - The whole thesis of the show is delivered in one of Rebecca’s many rock bottoms. We, like her, are used to simple stories with a single “all is lost moment” but she’s gone through so many that she must face reality: life doesn’t make narrative sense
3. You Stupid Bitch - A pivotal moment of the show. No other song (well, besides my number two) has offered such an insight into who Rebecca Bunch is and what she wants. It’s intense, vulnerable, and absolutely shameless on Rebecca’s part. @Racheldoesstuff hit it out of the park
2. (Tell Me I’m Okay) Patrick - This was one of the times I’ve seen myself the most in a fictional character. Rebecca’s desperate plea felt so familiar. I know what this feels like. I’ve felt it so many times, always unable to put it into words. I’ve rarely felt so understood
1. It Was a Sh*t Show - The performances! The lyrics! The music! The cinematography! That voice! Ugh, this song represents what the show does best: be funny, smart, and emotionally genuine at the same time. This one beautiful moment alone is more sincere than most romantic movies
