Trying to make sense to myself of what's happening and I've realised, we're not only grieving for people we've never met & their families, we're having to do it for 2-3 planeloads of people every day, whilst also watching an avoidable motorway pile-up in the UK in real time. 1/8
And dealing with the fact that the govt which has helped bring this about has an 80-seat majority, whilst being the most incompetent, uncaring government in anyone's living memory, more keen on enriching its friends & blame-shifting to the EU for the disaster of Brexit. 2/8
So it's grief, and it's visceral anger, and there's nowhere to go with that. No election for another 3 years. No reversing what's happened with Brexit, no bringing people, tens of thousands of people, back. 3/8
No ability to help our incredible, deeply stressed, emotionally and physically exhausted health and care professionals and an unseen army of unpaid carers, other than to keep ourselves safe and well so that we don't add to their workloads. 4/8
No ability to help those with small businesses who used to export to the EU and have seen their market disappear overnight because of trade barriers we have put up against the world. No ability to help musicians and artists abandoned whilst the govt blameshifts, again. 5/8
I'm aware this is downbeat, but unless someone voices it, it stays unvoiced, and that's worse for the soul than letting it out. It comes to something when you have to look to another country to see hope on the horizon & even there, the cracks are too deep to just paper over. 6/8
I've never shied away from letting Conservative politicians know how I feel about what they've done, and what they're still doing. Whether they read it or not, we still have to do it and we have to do it with honesty, with facts, with integrity and without personal attacks. 7/8
In the meantime we have to keep ourselves & those we love well, keep talking to each other & remember the way penguins deal with a snowstorm, taking turns to be on the outside, taking the brunt so that others can join the huddle & keep warm. We're all in this together. ❤️
